It was with great sadness that we heard of the death of Paul Naylor on Monday 12th July. Paul was best known as a Field Official but he worked tirelessly in other areas of athletics.
Northern Athletics sends its best wishes to the following athletes from our region who have been selected to represent GB & Northern Ireland in the coming European Championships July 27-1 August and the IAAF Junior Champs July 19-25
We are sorry to report the death last Monday (5th July)of leading North Eastern Counties Technical Official John Gurney after a long illness.
John's funeral takes place at Durham Crematorium on Wednesday, July 14 at 10.30am.
This year the Northern Athletics 5k championship was incorporated into the Pennine Lancashire 5k rod race, which also included the England Athletics championship.
The Northern Athletics championship race was again hosted by Blackburn Harriers, but this time the race was based not in the town centre, but at Witton Park, with the event again using closed roads. The out and back course started outside the park running towards Blackburn before finishing inside Witton Park.
The combined entry for the race was almost 250 athletes, with almost half being in the N.A. championships event. The race was started at the top of the hill on Preston Old road, and the early fast pace never abated, despite the blustery conditions.
We have just heard the very sad news that John Lunn, Leeds City stalwart, Northern Athletics archivist and man of many talents too numerous to list here, died in his sleep on 21 June 2010.
Our condolences go to Dorothy, Matthew and all John's family and friends. His humour, knowledge, enthusiasm and terrible T Shirts will be greatly missed by us all.
